Creating a safe space for your dog inside your house offers several benefits. It provides a designated area where your dog feels secure and can retreat to in times of stress or when they need some quiet time. This safe space can be particularly useful during events such as thunderstorms, fireworks, or when guests visit. Giving your dog a safe space to go to also allows agency in your dog’s life, a place they can go and be undisturbed.

Additionally, a safe space can prevent potential accidents or injuries, especially when you're not at home. It offers a controlled environment where your dog is less likely to encounter hazards or engage in destructive behavior. Overall, providing a safe space inside your house enhances your dog's well-being, behavior, and safety.

What does a safe space look like?

In my house, this is another dog bed (so many dog beds!) in our bedroom where it is quieter, and darker than the rest of the home. There will be times when we have company over, or if the TV is on loud, Renshaw will excuse himself and opt to go to the quieter room where his likelihood of being disturbed is drastically decreased. We don’t deter him from making this decision. We don’t try to bribe him to stay out in the main area with us. That is his space to retreat to whenever he needs it.
